NOTE: WritingToolLight requires Java 17 or higher

Download the latest version here

WritingToolLight is an extension for OpenOffice (for LibreOffice the full version of WritingTool is recommended) that enhances text editing with grammar checking (and additional spell checking) based on LanguageTool. The following features are offered:

  • The application runs locally on the computer by default. Therefore, no remote server is required.
  • The use of a remote server, including the LanguageTool Premium service, is still supported.
  • In addition to the spell checker of OpenOffice/LibreOffice, the LanguageTool spell checker is used.
  • A configuration dialog allows users to change settings such as:
    • Easily enable or disable optional rules
    • Easily disable or re-enable default rules
    • Define custom colors and styles for rule groups or individual rules (only LibreOffice)
    • Change parameters for specific special rules
    • Define profiles for checking different document types

Unlike the full version of WritingTool, WritingToolLight does not support cross-paragraph text checking, a caching mechanism, statistical analysis, or AI integration.

Requirements for WritingToolLight:

  • Java 17 (or higher)
A full Java must be installed. A Java headless is not enough.
For Windows user: It is recommended to use the latest LTE version of Java 21. You can get it here: https://download.oracle.com/java/21/latest/jdk-21_windows-x64_bin.msi
Note: For Java 24, the current version must be used; older versions are sometimes incompatible.

  • LibreOffice 4.2.4 (or higher)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 (or higher)

Note: If you use OpenOffice under Windows, you must have 32-bit Java 17 installed. This is not available at java.com. You can download it here: https://adoptium.net/de/temurin/archive/?version=17
